Pearl is the birthstone for June & represents 30th Wedding anniversaries & is somewhat of an enigma. It's a much treasured 'gemstone' that isn't a gemstone per se.
Pearls are formed within molluscs when a foreign body invades them - be it a grain of sand or (as in cultured pearls) a bead/foreign body. In poor quality pearls, the outer covering/nacre is incredibly thin & you can see the 'bead' through it. Many pearls are also bleached with hydrogen peroxide & coated to give them the appearance of a smooth, white surface.
The cheap pearls you see on Etsy should be avoided as they are often associated with slave labour practices employed in China & often fake due to lack of quality control in their one (mahoosive) warehouse - 99% of the worlds pearls pass through it!
These pearls have been quality checked & display no evidence of being bleached under a loupe. They are cultured baroque pearls with a lovely creamy white appearance with a subtle pinky hue that looks dreamy against your skin.
